Also called Zhenjiao Mosque, Phoenix Mosque was first built during the Tang Dynasty, but was later destroyed. Reconstruction began in 1281 under a Persian missionary, and the temple was continually expanded for the next several centuries. In its current form, the mosque consists of a prayer hall, a gateway and a large pavilion. Phoenix earned its name from the inner eaves of the prayer hall, whose curve is reminiscent of the mythical bird.
